Dinelops was named by Woodward (1907) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno , K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Dinelops ornatus.

It was assigned to Osmeroididae by Forey (1973); and to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002).
