Hajulia was named by Woodward (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Hajulia multidens.

It was assigned to Pterothrissidae by Forey (1973); to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterothrissinae by Hernández-Guerrero et al. (2021).
