Parechelus was named by Casier (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Ophichthidae.

It was assigned to Parechelidae by Casier (1967); to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophichthidae by van der Laan (2019).
