Taxonomy
Gryphaea africana was named by Lamarck (1801).

It was recombined as Exogyra africana by Lamarck (1882) and Furon (1935); it was recombined as Ilymatogyra (Afrogyra) africana by Malchus (1990) and Musavu Moussavou (2017); it was recombined as Ilymatogyra africana by Mendir et al. (2021).
