Taxonomy
Ganolytes was named by Jordan (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Ganoessus clepsydra. It is the type genus of Ganolytidae.

It was assigned to Pholidophoridae by Jordan (1919), Jordan and Gilbert (1919); to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Clupeidae by David (1943), Fierstine et al. (2012); and to Ganolytidae by Jordan (1921), van der Laan (2019).
