Histiothrissa was named by Woodward (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant]. It is the type genus of Histiothrissinae.

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Histiothrissinae by van der Laan (2019).
