Xyne was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Clupeidae by Jordan and Gilbert (1919), Jordan (1921), David (1943), Fierstine et al. (2012).
