Charitosomus was named by von der Marck (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u K Sant Sepkoski's reference number: 2,915].

It was assigned to Gonorhynchiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonorhynchidae by Woodward (1901), Grande (1996) and Grande and Grande (2008).
