Pseudoberyx was named by Pictet and Humbert (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is the type genus of Pseudoberycidae.

It was assigned to Clupeidae by Woodward (1899); to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Salmoniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pseudoberycidae by van der Laan (2019).
