Thaumaturus was named by Reuss (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Thaumaturidae.

It was assigned to Salmoniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thaumaturidae by van der Laan (2019).
