Cyclothone was named by Goode and Bean (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Stomiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonostomatidae by David (1943), Fierstine et al. (2012), Nazarkin (2015), Prikryl and Carnevale (2017) and Argyriou (2022).
