Maurolicus was named by Cocco (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 503]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Gonostomatidae by Schwarzhans (1980); to Gonostomaidae by Bedini et al. (1986); to Stomiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Sternopthychidae by Girone et al. (2006); and to Sternoptychidae by Steurbaut (1979), Nolf and Steurbaut (1983), Steurbaut (1984), Gaudant et al. (1996), Constantin (1999), Gaudant et al.
