Drepanidae was named by Gill (1872). It is extant. Its type is Drepane.

It was corrected as Drepaneidae by Betancur et al. (2013), Nelson et al. (2016), van der Laan (2019).

It was assigned to Ephippiformes by Jordan (1963); to Moroniformes by Nelson et al. (2016); and to Ephippiformes by Betancur et al. (2013), van der Laan (2019).
