Eurypholis was named by Pictet (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Eurypholis boissieri. It is the type genus of Eurypholidae.
It was assigned to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1901); to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eurypholidae by Goody (1969) and Forey et al. (2003).
