Taxonomy
Palaeolycus was named by von der Marck (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Palaeolycus dreginensis.

It was assigned to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1901), Goody (1969); and to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
