Paralepis was named by Cuvier (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Sudidae by Arambourg (1925), Arambourg (1927); to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Paralepididae by Gaudant et al. (1996), Gaudant et al. (2006), Carnevale (2007), Legendre et al. (2020); and to Paralepidae by Girone et al. (2006), Argyriou (2022).
