Taxonomy
Ctenothrissa was named by Woodward (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is the type genus of Ctenothrissidae.

It was assigned to Clupeidae by Woodward (1899); to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Ctenothrissidae by Patterson (1964); and to Ctenothrissiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
