Taxonomy
Protriacanthus was named by d'Erasmo (1946) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,915]. It is not extant. Its type is Protriacanthus gortanii. It is the type genus of Protriacanthidae.

It was assigned to Teleostei by Patterson (1964); to Acanthomorpha by Patterson (1993); to Ctenothrissiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protriacanthidae by Tyler and Sorbini (1996), van der Laan (2019).
