Stenobrachius salnikovi was named by Nazarkin and Nesov (1995). Its type specimen is PIN 3191/1001, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Yunun'vayam River, south, which is in a Miocene/Miocene marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
