Triphoturus was named by Fraser-Brunner (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Myctophidae by Schwarzhans (1978); to Myctophiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Lampanictini by Schwarzhans and Aguilera (2013); and to Lampanyctinae by Fierstine et al. (2012), Martin et al. (2018).
