Aipichthys was named by Steindachner (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2].

It was assigned to Carangidae by Woodward (1902); to Aipichthyidae by Patterson (1964), Patterson (1993), Otero and Gayet (1996); and to Polymixiiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
