Berycopsis was named by Agassiz (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 863].

It was assigned to Percidae by Dixon (1850); to Carangidae by Woodward (1902); to Polymixiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Beryciformes by Dietze (2009); and to Polymixiidae by Patterson (1964), Patterson (1993), Bannikov and Bacchia (2005), van der Laan (2019).
