Genypterus was named by Philippi (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Genypterinae by Schwarzhans (1980); to Ophidiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Ophidiidae by Casier (1966), Nolf (1972), Schwarzhans (2019); and to Lepophidiini by Oyanadel-Urbina et al. (2021).
