Osmerus larteti was named by Sauvage (1870). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Licata, which is in a Messinian marine horizon in Italy.
It was recombined as Photichthys larteti by Arambourg (1925) and Bedini et al. (1986); it was recombined as Diaphus larteti by Gregorova (2004).
