Leuresthes was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Atherinidae by Casier (1966); to Atheriniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Atherinopsidae by Fierstine et al. (2012).
