Aspius vexillifer was named by Sauvage (1870). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Licata, which is in a Messinian marine horizon in Italy.
It was recombined as Myctophum (Lampanyctus) vexillifer by Arambourg (1925); it was recombined as Diaphus vexillifer by Bedini et al. (1986), Gregorova (2004), Carnevale (2007), Legendre et al. (2020).
