Acanthonotos licatae was named by Sauvage (1870). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Licata, which is in a Messinian marine horizon in Italy.
It was recombined as Hemithyrsites licatae by Sauvage (1873); it was recombined as Lampanyctus licatae by Bedini et al. (1986), Gregorova (2004).
