Optivus was named by Whitley (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trachichthyidae by Schwarzhans et al. (2017), Schwarzhans (2019), Robinson et al. (2024).
