Tenuicentrum was named by Sorbini (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Tenuicentridae.
It was assigned to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Holocentridae by Carnevale et al. (2014), Bannikov (2014); and to Tenuicentridae by van der Laan (2019).
