Zeus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scombridae by Sauvage (1873); to Zeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Zeidae by Arambourg (1927) and Baciu et al. (2005).
