Cyclopterus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R]. It is extant. Its type is Cyclopterus lumpus. It is the type genus of Cyclopteridae, Cyclopteroidea.
It was assigned to Cyclopteridae by Hay (1902); to Scleroparei by Frost (1934); and to Scorpaeniformes by Sepkoski (2002).
