Platycephalus was named by Bloch (1795) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scorpaeniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platycephalidae by Stinton (1957), Stinton and Nolf (1970), Nolf (1972), Schwarzhans (1980), Steurbaut (1984), Schwarzhans (1985), Schwarzhans (2007), Schwarzhans et al. (2017), Schwarzhans (2019).
