Pecten asper was named by Lamarck (1819) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Miocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is a 3D body fossil.
It was replaced with Pecten rubicundus by Récluz (1842); it was corrected as Pecten asper by Sowerby (1847); it was recombined as Chlamys asper by Skwarko (1994); it was recombined as Merklinia aspera by Dhondt (1975), Schneider et al. (2013).
