Homalocrinidae was named by Angelin (1878). Its type is Homalocrinus.

It was assigned to Sagenocrinitacea by Ubaghs et al. (1978); to Icthyocrinacea by Ausich and Copper (2010); and to Sagenocrinida by Wright and Toom (2017).
