Anisotremus was named by Gill (1861) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pomadasyidae by Fitch and Lavenberg (1983); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Haemulinae by Tavera et al. (2012); and to Haemulidae by Ebersole et al. (2019), Oyanadel-Urbina et al. (2021).
