Enoplosus was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Enoplosidae.

It was assigned to Percoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Enoplosidae by van der Laan (2019).
