Ichnium sphaerodactylum was named by Pabst (1908). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Bromacker Quarry (upper level of Tambach sandstone), which is in an Artinskian fluvial-lacustrine sandstone in the Tambach Formation of Germany.
