Gempylus was named by Cuvier (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Gempylidae.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gempylidae by van der Laan (2019).
