Gymnosarda was named by Gill (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scombridae by Weiler (1938); to Thunninae by Bannikov (1979); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sardini by Klawe (1977), Collette et al. (2001), Monsch (2004), Monsch and Bannikov (2011), Ebersole et al. (2019), Oyanadel-Urbina et al. (2021).
