Ioscion was named by Jordan (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Ioscionidae.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Ioscionidae by David (1943), Fierstine et al. (2012); and to Sciaenidae by van der Laan (2019).
