Taxonomy
Pecten gibbosus was named by Pultney (1813).

It was recombined as Neithea gibbosa by Dartevelle and Freneix (1957), Quarto di Palo (1970); it was recombined as Neithea (Neithea) gibbosa by Dhondt (1973), Kendrick and Vartak (2007).
