Ostracoberyx was named by Fowler (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Ostracoberycidae.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ostracoberycidae by van der Laan (2019).
