Platylaemus was named by Dixon (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Platylaemus colei.

It was assigned to Labridae by Dixon (1850), White (1926); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
