Taxonomy
Priscacara was named by Cope (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. Its type is Priscacara serrata. It is the type genus of Priscacaridae.

It was assigned to Pomacentridae by Hay (1902); to Cichlidae by Haseman (1912), Hesse (1936); to Perciformes by Bellwood and Sorbini (1996), Sepkoski (2002); and to Priscacaridae by van der Laan (2019).
