Jawonya was named by Kruse (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Cm Tojo Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is not extant. Its type is Jawonya gurumal.

It was assigned to Heteractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nuchidae by Finks et al. (2004), Senowbari-Daryan and Rigby (2015).
