Sillago was named by Cuvier (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sillaginidae by Stinton (1957), Schwarzhans (1980), Steurbaut (1984), Schwarzhans (1985), Schwarzhans et al. (2017) and Schwarzhans (2019).
