Stellarispongia was named by Rigby (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi Sepkoski's reference number: 221]. It is not extant. Its type is Stellarispongia aspera.

It was assigned to Astraeospongiidae by Rigby (1976); and to Heteractinida by Sepkoski (2002).
