Achelonia was named by von Meyer (1860). Its type is Achelonia formosa. It was considered monophyletic by Anquetin et al. (2017).
It was assigned to Eurysternidae by Anquetin et al. (2017); and to Thalassochelydia by Joyce and Mäuser (2020).
