Sauropleura pectinata was named by Cope (1868). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Linton, which is in a Westphalian D mire/swamp coal in Ohio.
It was recombined as Oestocephalus pectinatus by Cope (1869); it was recombined as Ptyonius pectinatus by Hay (1902).
