Nectoportheus validus
Taxonomy
Nectoportheus validus was named by Cope (1868). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Barnsboro "greensand" (Hornerstown), which is in a Maastrichtian marginal marine horizon in the Hornerstown Formation of New Jersey. It is the type species of Nectoportheus.
It was recombined as Macrosaurus validus by Cope (1869); it was recombined as Liodon validus by Cope (1870), Cope (1875); it was recombined as Clidastes validus by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Tylosaurus rapax by Rapp (1944); it was considered a nomen dubium by Russell (1967).
